Berry & Flax Overnight Oats

Assembled in five minutes the night before - breakfast is simply there in the morning, whatever the night was like.

A cold jar you can eat one-handed, which matters more than any nutrient when the other arm is holding a baby. Yogurt, oats and flax make the kind of protein-plus-fiber breakfast that reads as steadier energy across a fractured morning, and the berries stop it feeling like fuel.

Method

  1. Stir. Stir the oats, Greek yogurt, milk, ground flaxseed and honey together in a mixing bowl for about a minute, until no dry pockets of oats remain and the honey is evenly worked through.
  2. Jar. Spoon the mixture into jars or containers with lids, one per serving, leaving a little room at the top for the berries. The mix will look loose now - the oats thicken as they soak.
  3. Chill. Refrigerate overnight, or for at least 6 hours, until the oats are soft and the mixture has thickened to a spoonable, pudding-like texture. The jars keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  4. Top. In the morning, top each jar with a handful of the mixed berries and eat cold, straight from the jar. Stir in a splash of milk if the oats feel too thick.
Worth knowingOats are the classic lactation food - the evidence is soft but the fiber, iron and steady energy are real either way.

Is this safe while breastfeeding?

Yes - everything in the jar is everyday food with no breastfeeding cautions attached. On the oats question the note already raises: supply follows how often your baby feeds rather than any particular food, and no ingredient has held up in trials as a way to change milk volume - which leaves this exactly what it looks like, a nourishing choice while breastfeeding, with fiber, calcium and steady energy doing the real work. If a coffee happens alongside, guidance while breastfeeding caps caffeine at 200 mg a day, though some US guidance allows around 300 mg.

Substitutions & allergens

  • Coconut or oat-based yogurt plus a fortified plant milk - removes dairy; choose fortified versions so the calcium keeps up.
  • Certified gluten-free oats - removes gluten.
  • Maple syrup stands in for the honey like for like.
  • Chia can replace the flax - it thickens more and stays in the same omega-3 seed territory.
  • Frozen berries stirred in the night before thaw by morning.

Storage & reheating

Making ahead is the whole point, and the FSA two-day rule sets the boundary: build tonight's and tomorrow's jars rather than the whole week's, and keep them refrigerated from assembly onwards. There is no reheating to get right because it is eaten cold. The freezer is no friend to this one - yogurt separates when thawed - so it stays a fridge habit.
