Calcium-Rich Recipes
Calcium has a clear moment in pregnancy: the second trimester, when the fetal skeleton mineralizes and calcium, alongside vitamin D, moves up the priority list. It stays relevant through breastfeeding, where calcium-forward meals remain part of the pattern our recipes follow.
A practical reassurance for pregnancy: pasteurized dairy is safe, and that includes more soft cheeses than most people think - pasteurized cottage cheese, cream cheese, mozzarella, feta, paneer, ricotta, mascarpone, and halloumi are all fine in pregnancy. The caution sits with mold-ripened, blue, and unpasteurized cheeses.
Sources our recipes credit: dairy, fortified plant milks, calcium-set tofu, canned fish with bones, and tahini.

How much calcium do I need during pregnancy?
Around 1,000 mg a day for most adults - roughly three servings of dairy or fortified alternatives. Needs are higher for teenage pregnancies; your midwife can confirm your target.
Which cheeses are safe in pregnancy?
Hard cheeses (cheddar, Parmesan), halloumi, mozzarella and pasteurized feta and ricotta are all fine. Skip mold-ripened soft cheeses like brie, camembert and blue unless cooked until steaming hot.
Can I get enough calcium without dairy?
Yes - fortified plant milks and yogurts, tofu set with calcium, tahini, almonds and leafy greens all contribute. If you avoid dairy entirely, mention it to your midwife so they can check whether a supplement makes sense for you.
