Iron-Recovery Green Smoothie
Spinach, mango, dates and fortified milk blended sweet and cold - a one-hand breakfast that quietly restocks iron after birth.
No chopping, no cooking, no plate to wash afterwards: everything goes into the blender as it comes. The dates and mango do the persuading, while the flax and nut butter turn it from a juice into something closer to an actual meal - one you can finish before the next feed interrupts.

Method
- Dates. Tear the dates open and check no pits are hiding inside, then drop them into the blender with the soy milk. Letting them sit a minute in the milk softens them for a smoother blend.
- Load. Add the spinach, frozen mango, flaxseed, nut butter and lime juice on top of the milk. Liquid at the bottom and the frozen fruit above it keeps the blades moving instead of jamming.
- Blend. Blend on high for a full minute. Stop when there are no green flecks and no date pieces left and the smoothie runs off the spoon in a thick, even stream. Stick blender: use a tall pitcher and thaw the mango for 10 minutes first.
- Adjust. Too thick to drink through the lid? Blend in water a splash at a time until it pours easily. Taste, and add another few seconds of blending if it feels gritty.
- Pour. Pour into lidded cups and drink cold. It separates as it stands, so shake before the next sip; anything left keeps in the fridge for a day.

Is this safe while breastfeeding?
Yes - everything in this glass fits normal breastfeeding eating; nothing here is restricted. Two practical notes are worth knowing. Tannins in tea and coffee get in the way of iron absorption, so if this smoothie is on iron duty, keep the hot drink separate from it rather than alongside. And caffeine itself has a ceiling while nursing: up to 200 mg a day is the NHS line, with some US guidance allowing around 300 mg.
Substitutions & allergens
- Sunflower seed butter swaps for the cashew or almond butter - removes nuts.
- Fortified oat milk replaces the soy milk - removes soy; keeping it fortified keeps the calcium tag honest.
- Out of dates? A ripe banana sweetens and thickens at the same time.
- Kale works instead of spinach; blend a little longer.
- Chia seeds can stand in for the ground flaxseed.
Storage & reheating
It is best straight from the blender. If you make it ahead, pour it into a lidded cup, refrigerate within 1-2 hours and finish it within 48 hours, per FSA chilling guidance - shake it first, as it separates. There is nothing to reheat. For a freezer version, bag the spinach, mango and dates flat on prep day and blend straight from frozen with the milk.
