Common questions
What foods should I avoid during pregnancy?
Raw or undercooked meat, fish and eggs; unpasteurized dairy and mold-ripened soft cheeses; deli meats and smoked fish unless heated until steaming; high-mercury fish such as swordfish and shark; alcohol. Caffeine should stay under 200 mg a day.
How many extra calories do I need while pregnant?
None in the first trimester, about 340 extra per day in the second, and about 450 in the third. That is a snack, not a bigger plate.
Is fish safe in pregnancy?
Low-mercury oily fish is actively encouraged: two portions a week of salmon, trout or sardines, always fully cooked, covers the DHA a growing brain needs.
How much should I drink while pregnant?
Roughly 1.6 to 2 liters of fluid a day, more in hot weather - water, milk and decaf drinks all count. Pale-yellow urine is the practical check.
