How many extra calories does breastfeeding take?
Roughly 450 to 500 per day, which is more than pregnancy did, plus around 700 ml of extra fluid that leaves your body as milk. Frequent snacks and drinking to thirst matter.
What foods help recovery after birth?
Iron and protein lead the list: red meat, lentils, eggs and dark leafy greens, most days. Just as important is format - batch-cooked, freezer-ready and one-handed meals get eaten; projects do not.
Can I eat sushi and soft cheese again after giving birth?
Yes. Almost all pregnancy food restrictions end at birth, including sushi, soft cheeses and runny eggs. If you are breastfeeding, keep caffeine under about 300 mg a day and time alcohol right after a feed.
How quickly should I try to lose weight after birth?
Slowly, if at all at first - your body is healing and (if nursing) producing milk. Focus on food quality and iron and protein intake, and take any weight questions to your postnatal check.
This is general information, not medical advice - always check with your doctor or midwife. See our sources and standards.
