Vitamin D Recipes
Vitamin D works alongside calcium in the second trimester of pregnancy, when the fetal skeleton mineralizes. Vitamin D status has also been associated with perinatal mood, which is an association and not a causal claim.
- Preconception: checking vitamin D is part of the standard preparation advice.
- Pregnancy: UK guidance suggests about 10 ug (400 IU) a day.
- Breastfeeding: the same 10 ug a day continues.
Food still counts: oily fish, eggs, fortified foods, and UV-exposed mushrooms are the sources our recipes credit.

How much vitamin D should I take in pregnancy?
NHS advice is 10 micrograms (400 IU) a day through pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it is one of the few nutrients where a supplement is advised as standard rather than only when testing says so. US guidance uses a slightly higher RDA of 600 IU. Food alone rarely covers it, which is why a supplement should be taken.
Do I need vitamin D all year round?
NHS advice is to take it every day between early October and late March, when UK sunlight is too weak for skin to make it. Some people are advised to take it all year: if your skin is usually covered outdoors, if you are mostly indoors, or if you have black or brown skin. There is also a ceiling worth knowing: adults are advised not to exceed 100 micrograms a day.
Which foods contain vitamin D?
Oily fish is the strongest food source, with egg yolks and fortified foods such as some breakfast cereals and plant milks contributing smaller amounts. These recipes build those in, but food is a supporting act here rather than the main route, and the daily supplement is still the advice.
