Vegetarian Postpartum Recipes
After birth, good eating means having real food ready when hunger hits. These recipes are made for batch cooking, freezing, reheating, and eating with one hand. They lean on pulses, whole grains, dairy, and eggs so meals still cover iron and protein, which are often the first parts of a vegetarian diet to slip when days start running together.

What should I eat after birth as a vegetarian?
Iron and protein deserve extra attention, along with simply eating enough, which can be harder than people expect after birth. Pulses, eggs, dairy, whole grains, nuts, and seeds all help, and eating them often matters more than trying to get everything from one meal. Plant iron is absorbed better with vitamin C on the plate, and expect your appetite to swing from very hungry to not hungry at all.
Does a vegetarian diet affect breastfeeding?
No. Milk production is driven mainly by how often and how well a baby feeds, rather than by whether you eat meat. A vegetarian diet does call for more thought about B12 and iodine, because both pass into breast milk and are easier to get from animal foods. If you breastfeed and eat vegetarian, ask your doctor or dietitian whether a supplement would help.
Which of these freeze well?
Most of the pulse-based dishes freeze extremely well, which makes them good ones to double. Cool them quickly, portion them, freeze them soon after cooking, and reheat each serving until piping hot all the way through. Rice needs a bit more care, so many parents find it easier to cook that fresh and pair it with the main dish rather than freeze it as part of one pot.
