Teriyaki-Style Salmon Rice Bowls

Sticky glazed salmon over rice with cucumber, avocado and edamame - the bowl that makes oily fish a weekly ritual.

Salmon does two jobs in this bowl, covering the omega-3 on the tags and counting toward vitamin D, as oily fish does. Preconception eating is mostly about patterns you can repeat, and a pantry glaze over rice with whatever crunch the fridge offers is the kind of dinner that actually gets repeated.

Method

  1. Rice. Rinse the rice, then simmer it in a covered pan with double its volume of water over low heat for 10 to 12 minutes, until the water is absorbed and the grains are tender. Rest it off the heat. Rice cooker: use the white-rice setting.
  2. Glaze. Simmer the tamari, maple syrup, vinegar and ginger in a small pan over medium heat for 2 minutes, until glossy and syrupy enough to coat a spoon. Pour off about a third to serve, and keep it separate.
  3. Salmon. Cook the salmon in a nonstick skillet over medium heat for 10 to 12 minutes, turning once and brushing with the pan glaze twice, until it flakes easily and reaches 145ยฐF (63ยฐC) at the thickest part.
  4. Bowl. Boil the edamame in water for 3 minutes, until bright green and hot through, then drain. Build the bowls with rice, edamame, cucumber and avocado, add the salmon, spoon over the reserved glaze and scatter with sesame seeds.
Worth knowingThe fully cooked, glazed version of a poke bowl - same appeal, pregnancy-proof habits from the start.

Is this safe when trying to conceive?

Yes - and salmon is a fish worth choosing on purpose right now. It is low in mercury and sits on the encouraged side of the advice: the NHS suggests oily fish up to 2 portions a week, a rhythm worth settling into before pregnancy, when the same limit applies. Omega-3 has also been studied for sperm quality, so this is a dinner for both partners, not just one.

Substitutions & allergens

  • Trout swaps straight in for the salmon and keeps the oily-fish credentials intact.
  • To go fish-free, glaze a block of firm tofu instead - removes fish, but the omega-3 and vitamin D that earn this bowl its tags mostly go with it.
  • Frozen peas for the edamame and coconut aminos for the tamari - together they remove the soy.
  • Skip the sesame seeds - removes sesame; extra scallion keeps the garnish.
  • Honey works in place of the maple syrup in the glaze.

Storage & reheating

Two rules meet in this bowl. Rice: chill any leftover rice fast (ideally within the hour), keep it in the fridge no more than 24 hours, and reheat it only once, steaming hot - the FSA home food fact checker is firm on this. Fish: cooked salmon follows the general leftover rules - fridge within 1-2 hours, eaten within 48 hours, reheated steaming hot, per FSA chilling guidance. Store components separately; cucumber and avocado do not keep once sliced, and the assembled bowl does not freeze.
