The Fertility Diet for Men: What the Evidence Says
Fertility advice is overwhelmingly aimed at women, yet in roughly half of couples who struggle to conceive, a male factor is involved. The encouraging part: sperm is produced on a rolling ~90 day cycle, so what a man eats and does this season shows up in the cells three months from now.
The five nutrients with the best evidence
- Zinc sits at the center of sperm production. Beef, prawns, pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds are the everyday sources.
- Selenium supports sperm motility. Two Brazil nuts cover a full day; more is not better.
- Omega-3 (DHA/EPA) builds the sperm membrane itself. Oily fish twice a week, walnuts on the other days.
- Antioxidants protect sperm DNA from oxidative stress. Berries, cooked tomatoes (lycopene), peppers and pomegranate all count.
- Folate is not just for her: it is linked to sperm DNA integrity. Greens, lentils and beans.
What to actually eat
- Steak with Chimichurri & Roasted Peppers - zinc plus lycopene from the roasted peppers.
- Garlic Prawn & Broccoli Stir-Fry with Cashews - zinc, selenium and iodine in 15 minutes.
- Chicken, Brazil Nut & Walnut Salad with Tahini - the selenium and omega-3 double act.
- Brazil Nut & Cacao Energy Balls - the snack that quietly does the job.
What measurably hurts
Heat (hot tubs, saunas, a laptop on the lap), smoking, heavy drinking, and a diet heavy in ultra-processed food are all associated with lower sperm counts and quality. Like the diet effects, most of this is reversible on the same ~3 month cycle.
The two-of-you plan
The simplest system is eating the same fertility-focused meals together - which is exactly why every recipe in our preconception collection serves two. Start about three months before you want to be trying in earnest.
Scale matters here: sperm counts reported in Western countries have roughly halved over the past 50 years in pooled analyses, which makes the modifiable levers - diet, heat, smoking, alcohol - worth taking seriously. Start with our fertility recipes (every one serves two), especially the dinners and snacks where zinc and selenium concentrate.

Common questions
How long before trying should men change their diet?
About three months - one full cycle of sperm production. Changes made today show up in the cells involved in conception a season from now.
Do fertility supplements for men work?
Evidence is mixed and food-first covers most needs. Zinc, selenium and omega-3 from real food have the best track record; discuss anything beyond a basic multivitamin with your doctor.
