Method

  1. Prep. Break the peeled oranges into segments and cut the carrots into small chunks, no bigger than a thumbnail - the smaller they start, the smoother the finished drink. Snap the frozen banana into a few pieces.
  2. Load. Pour the water into the blender first, then add the carrots, ginger, hemp seeds and flaxseed, with the orange segments and frozen banana on top. Liquid at the bottom helps the blades get moving.
  3. Blend. Blend on high for a full minute without stopping. The carrot is the slow one here, so keep going until no gritty carrot specks remain and the drink pours in a single smooth stream.
  4. Serve. Blend in a splash more water if you want it thinner, then taste. Pour into glasses and drink it soon after blending, while it is still cold and thick from the frozen banana.
Worth knowingBlending keeps the whole fruit's fiber, which juice throws away - the hemp adds protein and a little plant omega-3.

Is this safe when trying to conceive?

Yes - nothing in this glass is restricted when you are trying to conceive, and it suits both partners. For the sperm-producing half, antioxidant-rich foods like these are studied for semen quality - the trial evidence is low-certainty, so treat it as a good pattern rather than a promise. Give the carrots a proper scrub, since they go in raw.

Substitutions & allergens

  • Chia or extra ground flax swap in for the hemp seeds and keep the plant omega-3 in the picture.
  • Half an avocado replaces the frozen banana for the same creaminess with less sweetness.
  • Milk or a fortified plant milk instead of water makes it more of a meal and adds calcium.
  • No fresh ginger? Leave it out - the orange and carrot carry the glass on their own.

Storage & reheating

This one is for drinking, not storing: blend it fresh and have it straight away when you can. If you do make it ahead, keep it covered in the coldest part of a fridge running at 0-5C, per FSA chilling guidance, drink it the same day, and give it a good shake first - it separates harmlessly. Skip the freezer: as a drink it thaws watery and is not worth the tray space.
