Smoked Paprika Popcorn with Nutritional Yeast
Stovetop popcorn tossed with olive oil, smoked paprika and cheesy nutritional yeast - a huge bowl for barely any calories.
A pan of kernels, a lid and a good shake stand in for the bag of chips you would otherwise open. When you are both tidying up everyday eating before trying for a baby, the changes that stick are the easy, repeatable ones - and a savory snack you make yourself in minutes is exactly that kind of change.

Method
- Heat. Pour half the oil into a large heavy pot with a lid and add 3 popcorn kernels. Set it over medium-high heat and wait, uncovered, until those kernels pop, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Pop. Add the rest of the kernels in one layer, cover, and shake the pot across the burner every few seconds. In 3 to 4 minutes the popping slows to a gap of two seconds; pull the pot off immediately. Air popper: pop the kernels dry, then toss with all the oil in the bowl.
- Toss. Tip the popcorn into your biggest bowl, leaving any unpopped kernels behind in the pot. Drizzle the remaining oil over while the popcorn is still hot and toss with your hands to coat.
- Season. Sprinkle the nutritional yeast, smoked paprika and salt over in stages, tossing between each, so the seasoning lands evenly instead of clumping at the bottom. Eat straight away, while it is warm and crisp.

Is this safe when trying to conceive?
Yes - for both of you. Nothing in popcorn, olive oil, nutritional yeast or smoked paprika appears on any list of foods to limit when trying to conceive, whichever partner is doing the snacking. Preconception guidance cares about the overall eating pattern more than any single snack, and this bowl carries no fine print: nothing unpasteurized, no caffeine, nothing that needs a weekly cap.
Substitutions & allergens
- Swap smoked paprika for za'atar, mild chili powder or plain black pepper - the method carries any dry seasoning.
- Butter can replace the finishing oil - richer, but note it brings dairy into an otherwise allergen-free bowl.
- Finely grated parmesan can stand in for the nutritional yeast - same salty depth, and the same dairy caveat.
- No nutritional yeast at all? Extra paprika and salt still make a good bowl - you just lose the B-vitamin angle the note mentions.
Storage & reheating
This is a make-and-eat snack, and none of the usual leftover rules apply - there is nothing perishable in the bowl. In an airtight container at room temperature it stays decent to the next day, then turns chewy rather than unsafe. The fridge actively speeds the softening, so keep it out of there, and the freezer has nothing to offer popcorn. Make less, or finish the bowl - which has historically not been a problem.
